  1. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINENHTSA 25V796000Nov 18, 2025

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Sonata vehicles. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank.

Consequence: A melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

    Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed as necessary, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed beginning January 15, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 286. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 19, 2025.

    Park outside until repaired

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Palisade Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles. The electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump controller to overheat.

Consequence: An electric oil pump assembly that overheats increases the risk of a vehicle fire.

    Remedy

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller, as necessary, free of charge. Reliability verdict for the 2023 Hyundai Sonata

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata posts a below-segment reliability score, landing in the moderate-to-mixed range rather than matching the class norm. That gap signals higher-than-average buyer exposure to problems compared with typical competitors, even without an unusually large recall footprint. Recalls are limited, suggesting formal corrective actions have not been widespread.

Complaint patterns are not narrowly concentrated. The largest share clusters around fuel/propulsion, engine, and powertrain, with additional reports in the electrical system and miscellaneous categories. That spread points to multiple systems contributing to owner-reported issues rather than a single dominant weak spot. As a facelift/refresh year, the data reflects a model in an update cycle, but the reliability outcome still trails the segment baseline.

Overall risk level: moderate, with elevated risk versus the segment average.
