VIN decoder FAQ

Is the VIN decoder really free?

Yes. Decoding a VIN into its specifications is completely free and uses the public NHTSA vPIC database. A paid VinExposed report is only needed for history records like title brands, damage and odometer readings.

What can a VIN tell me?

A decode reveals the year, make, model, trim, body style, engine, drivetrain, transmission, and where the vehicle was manufactured. It does not include ownership or accident history — those come from a full report.

Where do I find the VIN?

Look through the windshield at the driver-side dashboard, inside the driver-side door jamb, or on the title, registration and insurance documents. A VIN is 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q.
