ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Owners report frequent issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Trax's electrical system, primarily involving the instrument panel and infotainment screens going blank or rebooting while driving. Typical symptoms include loss of speedometer, turn signals, and other dashboard indicators, often at speeds over 30 MPH, with some incidents occurring on highways. Complaints also mention complete vehicle shutdowns and, in one instance, a fire following electrical malfunctions. These issues are reported at varying mileages, with some occurring as early as 12,000 miles. Safety implications include increased risk of accidents due to loss of vehicle control and visibility of critical driving information.

Owner complaints21

ENGINE

Owners report frequent catastrophic engine failures in the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, often occurring without warning lights or prior symptoms. Complaints frequently mention sudden loss of power, loud noises such as bangs or explosions, and oil leaks, sometimes resulting in large holes in the engine block. These issues are commonly noted at mileage as low as 7,696 to around 54,546 miles. Two incidents involve fires, and multiple reports describe dangerous situations where vehicles lose power on highways, posing safety risks. Potential buyers should be aware of these patterns and the associated safety implications.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax frequently report issues related to electronic systems and air conditioning failures. Common symptoms include infotainment screens glitching, audio surging uncontrollably, and the Onstar system dropping connection. Multiple owners also describe air conditioning failures, with reports of high cabin temperatures and lengthy part backorders. Two complaints involve fires occurring under unknown circumstances, with one vehicle catching fire while parked and another while in use. These issues are reported at varying mileages, including some vehicles with low mileage, and have potential safety implications due to distraction, loss of communication, and extreme cabin temperatures.

Severity signals: 0 crash, 2 fire, 0 injury reports

Owner complaints6

POWER TRAIN

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax frequently report issues related to the power train, with symptoms including jerking and pulsation at various speeds, particularly between 60-72 MPH, which some attribute to transmission slipping or brake engagement. Common complaints also mention gear backlash noises, especially when using adaptive cruise control, and several instances of total engine failure requiring replacement, often with the engine on backorder. These problems typically arise at low mileages, with some owners experiencing issues as early as 579 miles. Safety implications include reports of loss of power and difficulty steering, although no crashes or fires are noted. Prospective buyers should be aware of these reported issues, particularly the potential for unresolved engine and transmission problems.

Owner complaints4

AIR BAGS

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax frequently report issues with air bags not deploying during crashes, with three out of four complaints involving this failure. Typical symptoms include significant vehicle damage from impacts without air bag deployment, resulting in injuries such as back pain, migraines, and neck pain. These incidents occur at varying speeds, from as low as 8-10 MPH to 65 MPH, and at mileages around 33,526 and 40,000 miles. One report describes the air bags deploying but causing burns due to the vent location, indicating potential safety implications during deployment. These patterns suggest potential risks for used car buyers, particularly concerning air bag reliability in crash scenarios.

Owner complaints4

SERVICE BRAKES

Owners report several issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Trax's service brakes. Commonly mentioned problems include rear brakes locking up when the brake pedal is touched and an air duct interfering with pedal operation, which can prevent the car from stopping or accelerating properly. Another frequent issue is a loss of brake power, requiring increased pedal force and advance slowing, with warning lights indicating brake system failure and reduced steering assist. These issues are noted by owners as occurring at low mileages, such as 350 miles, and can lead to situations where the vehicle is difficult to control, posing potential safety risks. Multiple complaints also mention the automatic braking system engaging too forcefully, which has the potential to cause abrupt stops.

Owner complaints3

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Owners report that the 2024 Chevrolet Trax experiences issues related to engine and turbocharger failures. Complaints frequently mention a loss of motive power while driving, often accompanied by smoke from the engine or warning lights. These failures typically occur between 30,000 and 88,000 miles. In some cases, the engine block is found to be cracked, and oil circulation failure is cited as a cause. Safety implications include the sudden loss of power at highway speeds, though no crashes or fires are reported. These patterns suggest potential repair costs for buyers considering a used model.

Owner complaints2

STRUCTURE

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax report issues with the vehicle's door structure, specifically noting two distinct problems. First, some owners describe the upper corners of the door frames as being extremely sharp, which has resulted in minor injuries such as cuts when passengers are exiting the vehicle. This issue has been reported to occur under normal use conditions. Second, owners mention that the doors do not remain open when exiting or entering the vehicle, particularly in windy conditions or when parked on an incline, leading to the doors closing unexpectedly on occupants' legs. Complaints indicate these issues appear at low mileage, around 3,600 miles, and suggest potential safety implications due to the risk of injury.

Severity signals: 0 crash, 0 fire, 1 injury reports

Owner complaints2

STEERING

Owners report issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Trax's steering and cruise control systems. One complaint describes a stabili-trak system warning light, reduced engine and steering performance, and violent shaking at approximately 1,000 miles. Another owner highlights a design flaw in the cruise control engagement button, which can inadvertently activate at high speeds, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. This issue, attributed to the button's design, poses a potential safety risk, although no crashes or injuries have been reported. These complaints indicate concerns about both electronic stability and cruise control systems, which may impact vehicle safety and control.

Owner complaints2

SEAT BELTS

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax report issues with seat belt functionality, including a failure to restrain during a high-speed collision, resulting in serious injuries such as a perforated small intestine. Another complaint highlights difficulty in unbuckling the seat belt due to its positioning between the seat and console, raising concerns about emergency egress. These issues occur shortly after purchase, with one owner noting problems from the vehicle's initial use. Safety implications include the potential for injury in crashes and challenges in quick evacuation during emergencies.

    Remedy

The VCU software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023.
